On 5 and 6 October, the 3rd Rolls-Royce Science Camp in Japan 2019 was held at Shimane University. The camp was sponsored by Rolls-Royce Japan, planned and managed by Leave a Nest Co., Ltd., and co-hosted and supported by Shimane University, Shimane Prefectural Government, and the Education Board. Rolls-Royce Japan has been supporting STEM education for the young generation who may enter the aerospace field in the future, and the Shimane institutions also aim to develop specialized human resources in the manufacturing industry in Shimane with the Next Generation Tatara Project.
On the first day of the programme, 17 participants from high schools in Shimane Prefecture started with learning the basic knowledge of jet engines, then they were divided into four groups and designed mini Styrofoam hovercrafts. On the second day, the students cooperated with their teammates to build the fastest and the most efficient hovercrafts in the Science Camp. At the competition, the final part of the event, the students gave presentations and driving demonstrations of their original hovercrafts. Mr. Tsuyukubo, President of Rolls-Royce Japan Co., Ltd., and Mr. Hattori, President of Shimane University commented at the closing session that the trial and error mindset was crucial in the engineering field, and they hoped that the struggling experience during the camp would help them in their future college and social lives.
