On the 3rd and 4th of August, 8 junior and high school students who are on summer holidays visited NEXTA and had experiential learning with the professors. This experiential learning was brought by Professor Ota and Assistant Professor Ueki of NEXTA. In the beginning, professor Ota introduced amorphous alloy. He explained that since it has remarkable soft magnetism, it has a possibility to make motors more efficient while on the other hand, it is difficult to process because it is thin and hard, and that is the issue that he is trying to resolve now.
Then, the assistant professor Ueki showed the students some experiments of “Quenching” and “Tempering” using piano wire which are some processes of heat-treatment. He explained the characteristic points of metals that even it is originally the same material, it is possible to have different behaviours depends on how you heat, cool, and process it. After that, had tension testing using Electrothermal Mechanical Testing System (ETMT). The students observed metals after the tempering process using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and broken-out section of metals after tension testing.
The students experienced the world of electronic microscope that they cannot see by the naked eye and observed carefully the broken-out section that was processed in different ways.
After the experiential learning, the students gave us their impressions such as “It was difficult but fun!”, “I was lucky to see all these research instruments that I don`t usually get to see. “and a student also said, “It was a great opportunity to receiving words from University professors”.
We will continue to have tours or experiential learnings at NEXTA. Please feel free to contact us for details.
