A special lecture at Matsue Minami High School by the vice director of the Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Centre

The 23rd of June, Matsue Minami High school has invited us for the explore science department`s kick-off lecture session. A special lecture by the vice director of the Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Centre, Professor Kazuto Arakawa was held setting “Science in metallic materials” as a theme. This lecture was brought to 75 students who are in the first year of exploring science department as one of the “Super Science High school (SSH)” program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT).
In the lecture, he explained that the structure of the metal is a crystal which atoms are lined up periodically, and he also explained how it deforms. Then he mentioned that the research using electronic microscopes helps developing new materials. He told the students, “You can make it possible something that no one has ever done before” and “You will be able to figure out what you did not understand before”, and expressed the interestingness of the research. In the end, the students were divided into some small groups and tried out the practice exercise given by professor Arakawa. One of the students said that the practice exercise was very impressive and would like to continue to explore.
A the end of the lecture, Professor Arakawa described his expectation and saying, “The good thing about being a researcher is that I am able to feel that I am progressing and growing that I used to be. I would like you to continue your quest.”
