A special lecture by Professor Graham McCartney an Academic Visitor from the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford@ Matsue Minami high school

On Tuesday 21 February, 2023, a special lecture by Professor Graham McCartney an Academic Visitor from the Department of Materials at  the University of Oxford has been held as a part of a seminar called “Academic English seminar for human resources development to be able to work globally” at Matsue Minami High School which has been appointed as a one of the “Super Science High Schools (SSH)” by the MEXT( Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)

The lecture was brought by Professor Graham McCartney who is working together on research with Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Centre (NEXTA) at Shimane University. More than 50 students attended which included those with both a scientific or non-scientific students.

The theme of the talk was "Turning your high school achievements into a fulfilling profession- reflections on my career as a university professor-". The lecture was presented in English, however, the professor explained the details with good images easily understood English sentences. He firstly talked about his dream of going to the University of Oxford, then he made his dream come true and studied very hard at the University of Oxford. He also explained about now he is playing an active role worldwide as a professor, as well as the importance of Materials Science as in vital subject for innovation in science and engineering.

At the end of the lecture, he encouraged the students saying, “You are standing at the beginning of your career now. Today, I talked about my story of studying Material Science and becoming a professor, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be science, but I want you to find what you like and pursue your dream, and work hard.”

Dr.Utada and Dr.Tang, who are senior post-doctoral researchers in the Department of Materials at  the University of Oxford were able to join the lecture at the end and they also encouraged the students.
