On the 21st of April, 2021, we held the opening ceremony for NEXTA, the new research building of the Next Generation Tatara Co-Creation Centre. Almost 50 people including the prefectural governor Mr.Tatsuya Maruyama, and the guests representing political and business establishment or local public authorities, educational institutions, and related companies, as well as the professors, attended the ceremony.
First of all, President Mr.Hattori made a speech representing the organizer. He stated that “Since ancient times, Tatara iron-making and its glorious tradition and culture find deep roots here in Shimane. We will make every effort so that this NEXTA building will be able to contribute to the development of Shimane`s regional industry and also the metallurgical industry in Japan. This year will be the 4th year of the subsidy project. We will have more strengthening of function and strive to be a brilliant university.”
Secondly, Mr. Tatsuya Maruyama, the prefectural governor, mentioned that “The NEXTA `s opening is a great opportunity to make a decision to promote the project furthermore in reacting flexibly to the changing economic circumstances. It is expected that to promote the project with wide vision in collaboration of industry-government-academia and finance, centering Shimane University.”
Also, Mr. Mitsuaki Nishiyama Representative Executive Officer, Chairman and President, Hitachi Metals, Ltd. (Read by Tomonori Ueno, Director, Metallurgical Laboratory, Hitachi Metals, Ltd.) stated that “We expect that the world-leading products will be born through the research in this NEXTA building. Also, we will create together the top-level research and high-level human resources.”
Moreover, there were guests who could not attend the ceremony due to the Covid-19. We received a video message from Mr.Osamu Hayashizaki, General Manager of Regional revitalization at the Cabinet Office. Also, a congratulatory addressing letter from Mr. Fumiharu Kawanaka, Deputy Director-General, Higher Education Bureau read out by the moderator. Professor Reed, the director of the NEXTA addressed appreciation through the video message from the University of Oxford in the U.K
Finally, we had the ribbon cutting ceremony by the guests, and took memorial photos. Then we had a preview tour of the building to show the facilities and equipment. It was a pleasant spring day and we were able to close the ceremony with a peaceful atmosphere.
